Relax at the Jjimjilbang Spa in Seoul
Korean beauty has been a hit in the West, from k-pop and DIY masks to k-pop. But a lesser-known part of Korea’s culture, the Jjimjilbang or spa, is equally as impressive.
A Jjimjilbang usually has a separate wet area for each gender and a dry area that is shared by all. For your first time, follow these tips to make the most of your experience!
Wet Sauna
The main complex has 11 sauna rooms for men and women, each with a different heat level and healing power, including the Amethyst or yellow mud saunas, as well as an ice-sauna. There are also several baths, showers and three pools, and the whole place is decorated with Korean decor in a cozy atmosphere. The staff are attentive and friendly, and there’s a good selection of massage services and beauty treatments available.
A jjimjilbang, or traditional Korean bathhouse, is a type that features hot and cool baths, steam saunas, dry saunas, and relaxation areas. It is a popular social gathering place and is often gender segregated. Most jjimjilbangs offer food, drinks and massage services.
Many people enjoy spending the night at a jjimjilbang, especially those with young kids in tow. The facilities are usually spacious, with a lounge area where you can watch TV and relax, as well as sleeping areas or ‘sleeping caves’ to rest in overnight.
Whether you opt for a wet or dry sauna, both have benefits for the body and mind, including detoxification, improving circulation, reducing stress and improving skin tone and texture. But be sure to hydrate, and always leave the sauna if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable. It’s also important to avoid drinking alcohol and taking any medication before visiting a sauna.
Dry Sauna
A dry sauna is a great alternative for people who don’t like the feeling of being completely engulfed by steam. These saunas use a combination of hot air and wood to create a steady sensation of heat that is often gentler than the steamy experience. Dry saunas can be used to treat a variety of health conditions, including reducing the risk of high blood pressure and improving circulation, as well as alleviating symptoms of some rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia and ankylosing spondylitis. In addition, they can also relieve respiratory issues and improve exercise performance in athletes.
Depending on the facility, Jjim-jilbangs may have several sauna rooms with different temperatures and humidity levels as well as soothing hot and cold pools, massage areas, and communal spaces for relaxing, socializing or sleeping (known as “norebang”). These facilities are usually co-ed, but customers are given a pair of pajamas at check-in that they must wear in these areas.
The Jade room, for example, is designed with multi-colored gemstone mosaics and is lined with Himalayan Salt Rocks, which provide both a pleasing ambiance and acupressure to the feet. The Himalayan salt helps to remove toxins from the body, while the stone promotes relaxation. The crystals and stones have a calming scent that helps to relax and soothe the mind.
Hot Tub
A Hot Tub is a great addition to any home. It is a great way to relax and spend time with friends and family. It is also a great way to reduce stress. The US Hot Tub Association claims that a few sessions in a spa can lower blood pressure up to 15 points.
Costco and other mass merchants have attempted to break into the Hot Tub & Swim Spa market in the past. Unfortunately, they never seem to get it right. This is mostly due to their reluctance to pay a fair price for quality, so they cut corners on everything else.
The result is a lower quality spa that will not last as long. The pumps in these spas are not rated properly and will fail more quickly than a pump that is rated correctly. The Gecko control system is used in the cheap spas, and it requires a heater replacement every 5-7 years. These heaters are expensive.
If you’re looking to purchase a new hot tub, September and October are usually the best months. It is during this time that retailers are trying to get rid of their inventory in preparation for the winter and holiday season. Also, many of the higher quality manufacturers shut down production sometime around December and during the holidays for re-tooling and clean up of their manufacturing facility. This could result in longer waiting times to receive a spa.
