Mature Exhibitionist
Mature Exhibitionists, or mature men, are men who become sexually aroused by exposing their genitals and breasts in front of an unwilling observer. This is typically done in public places, such as laundromats, restaurants or parks. These men do not seek sexual contact with their victims, nor do they attempt to rape them. Most of these acts are committed males. However, a few females have been reported to be exhibitionists. There are several theories as to the cause. Some psychoanalytical theorists believe that exhibitionistic behavior is a result of a disturbed identification with motherhood. They claim that male children need to distinguish themselves from their mother to feel a sense self-worth. Exhibitionists believe that they can achieve this goal by displaying mammary glands and genitals in front of prepubescent girls.
Most people with an exhibitionistic disorder don’t seek treatment and are diagnosed only when they are arrested. Treatment consists of psychotherapy and sometimes medication. Treatment aims to change the underlying motivations for these behaviors rather than the specific actions. Cognitive therapy can help to achieve this goal, as it focuses on changing negative thought patterns and beliefs. It is often combined with family or group therapy, to help patients repair damaged marriages and family ties that are strained by the exhibitionism. Men can reduce their libido by taking testosterone-blocking medications.
