Cuneo ran this crazyhouse and he didn’t discourage sexual intimidation of his female brokers, Antilla writes. He even enjoyed it himself.

The Story

Chrissy is a young go-go girl who arrives in Philadelphia, 1960, with dreams of a dancing future and a past of sexual abuse from her parents. She lands a job at Big Tom’s sleazy Boom Boom Room in an attempt to make some money and find some stability in her life. While working at the club, she careens through a variety of unsuitable relationships of both sexes and finds some peace of mind in her friendship with an earnest gay neighbor.

The book is filled with fascinating details about Smith Barney and its founder Charles Cuneo. He was sexually harassed by his brokers and did not discourage it. Many of his male co-workers were also guilty of this. The firm’s successor, Citigroup, paid millions in a class action settlement and now has diversity monitors to ensure no repeat of the Boom-Boom Room.

The Venue

Boom Boom Room is the home of the finest in local and international music talent. It has hosted a Who’s Who of Soul and Funk, Jazz, RnB, and Boogaloo Music Artists including JOHN LEE HOOKER and ZANDER ANDREAS.

The venue has been designed to be a slightly romantic, sentimental love letter to everything from Windows on the World to Brazilian design and the inside of a Bentley. It’s organically shaped and has stadium seating that looks just like a river. It’s very sensual. It has a large dancing floor and a smaller stage for acoustic performances. The lights have been set up to be flexible, can change colors and are programmed to create the moods of various shows.

Jim and Brandy take great pride in the fact that they are 100% independent. Their goal has been to build a venue that they could be proud of, and that would allow them to keep their own doors open with the help of their performance family. In a very dark time, that is a huge accomplishment. It is the reason that they continue to strive, even today. They have a lot of pride in their work and are dedicated to their vision of the place they call The Boom Boom Room.
